So without further ado, let’s get into the interview. Hi, Rachel, welcome to the show.

Rachel Strivelli 1:34
Hi, I’m excited to be here. Gianna Yes,

Gianna Diggs 1:37
I am so excited to have our conversation today. Talking about shifting self talk, which I feel as moms as entrepreneurs, this topic is super important. So my first question is, what is what exactly is self talk? Hmm,

Rachel Strivelli 1:53
yes, yeah, let’s start with the basics and work our way out. So I see self talk as all of that inner monologue or dialogue, the the phrases and words running through your head as you go about your day. And some of the most obvious ones to notice are, when we’re doing something that’s challenging, whether that’s parenting, trying to get our kids to eat a certain food go into bed early, or on time, trying out new things in business, a lot of those environments are where self talk kind of starts bubbling up. And they’re these things that just run through our minds. So everyone has self talk, and depending on how much you work with your brain, and with awareness, and also, I believe, with self love, you can impact it and modify it to be more positive. Because if you just let it run wild, it’s like children or dogs or anything else, if you don’t train them and teach them, you’re gonna have your hands full.

Gianna Diggs 3:02
Right? That’s, and that’s so important. It’s so important, because the things around us, like what we have going on in our lives is gonna always impact the way we talk to ourselves. Um, and, you know, if you’ve had a parent who, like, always talk down on you, right, like, That’s the voice that you’re gonna hear in your head when you’re trying to do something, or you’re always gonna hear that negative parent that always has something to say, every time you try to do something that, you know, they may not approve of. So, so my question is, because we all have it, whether it’s positive or negative. How does that how does that affect our business? Mm hmm.

Rachel Strivelli 3:45
I think it’s one of the most impactful things on your business. And in some ways, it’s one of the easiest things to fix, because it’s something that you have control over. Now, I don’t have control over the things that run through my head about, oh, what’s going to happen if I make this post, it’s really vulnerable? Or what’s going to happen if I raise my prices? Or what’s going to happen? If I create a new program? Are people going to buy all of the questions that come up? I can’t necessarily stop them from coming, but how I react to them is, is totally in my control. So a couple years ago, I had a client who was meeting with me and what she said she wanted to work on well, she said, Look, my business there’s a lot of unpredictability in terms of when clients come in. So she was a coach and also a freelancer. And she said, you know, some months I’ll have three clients and then I won’t have any the next month and she said, I really want you to help me handle the up and down and just learn how to live with it better. And, and in talking with her. One of the first things I dove into is I said, is that really what you want? You really want to handle up and down income? Or do you actually want to know, oh, I have for income for clients guaranteed every month, or for clients always coming in I have guaranteed income every month. And and I asked her and she said, Oh, yeah, actually, that is what I want, I want, I want to consistency. And, and of course, like we can’t always predict how many people are going to come in. But if you know actions that you’re doing in your business that typically lead to people wanting to work with you, you do have some control over. But so when we shifted even how she was talking about her problem, all of the sudden, we had a new problem to solve, because, for me coaching her on dealing with ups and downs, I mean, any one of us can can learn various techniques to deal with the up and down and we will have ups and downs, naturally. But but she didn’t want the ups and downs, she actually wanted consistent clients coming in. And so when we shifted the self talk, we started looking for different solutions. And that totally impacted the next couple months of her business. And so this is what I love about self talk because it and you know, when we were kids, well, I don’t know if people still do the story about the train. And I think I can, but it’s like the things that we repeat to ourselves when we’re doing something that’s hard or something that’s new. That’s what gives us the courage to go on and do it. Or to say, this isn’t working out, let me learn to live with the circumstances. But if you if you want to succeed in business, and I think all of your listeners probably do, there’s going to be changes that happen in the world that we can’t predict we can impact. So there’s always going to be ups and downs and unknowns. So the more that we can work with our own self talk and learn to find the positive solutions, talk about what we really want be really kind to ourselves focus on what what we’re going after, and not what we’re afraid of happening.

Gianna Diggs 7:25
And that’s so powerful. Because when you’re starting out in business, there’s so many things that you have to do, right, like most people are going to be a solopreneur. So that means you’re wearing 1520 hats at one time. And if our mindset is not, right, right, all those things will overwhelm us. And then it’s like, yeah, okay, I think this is it. Maybe I shouldn’t be in business. Maybe I should go back and get a nine to five or maybe I should just get a part time job. And we tell ourselves all these different things. Because we haven’t worked on our or train our brain. I don’t know if you’ve heard that. Uh huh. name is Dana. Dana. Dana Wilde, I think is her name, who has a train your brain program. And it’s it’s really combating that like that self talking, and shifting that those things that will keep you stuck?

Rachel Strivelli 8:18
Definitely. And yes, I don’t know about that program. But I 100% agree with the concept. Because you’re right, it’ll keep us stuck. So if you train your brain, to pay attention to to listen to the things that are going to move you forward, you’re going to get farther. And you know, so here’s one easy thing that already your audience is doing listening to this podcast, you’re training your brain to think about yourself as an entrepreneur, to think about yourself as successful, too. Because many of us unless we had a parent, or a close friend or family member who was in business, we don’t know how to think like a business person, because it’s different than how you think as an employee. And like you said, there are so many more things to juggle and maybe we’ve all worked at jobs where there was a lot to juggle, but at the end of the day, you got to leave. Yep. Yep. But when you’re in business, like where do you leave to go to like, righteousness is still yours to some degree. And I think it’s good to, you know, turn off and take breaks from thinking about it. But I think what you can train your brain and start being around other entrepreneurs listen to the ways that they’re talking, and the ways that they’re thinking, because that is going to help you start developing this internal self talk. This is going to be the type of self talk you need to succeed. Because like you said before, let’s say you had a parent, or a role model who’s really critical, if that’s what is influencing you, when you go to post on Instagram, or you think, oh, I want to start a tick tock account because there’s a lot of activity there. You think, but I’m so scared, and so and so. And you hear the voice of whatever it is that they said, Oh, you’re, you don’t complete things or you’re not successful, or most businesses fail, why are you doing this? Right? If you’re listening to that you might not even ever start.

Gianna Diggs 10:23
Mm hmm. Yeah, that’s, that’s so powerful. Because we, there’s always someone in our head, and, and a lot of times, it’s not our own, right. It’s not our own voice that’s in our head. And, you know, I definitely identify with that of just hearing certain people, whether it’s positive or negative, you know, certain influential people in your life. So I was, um, a question that downloaded as you were speaking was techniques. Right? So what So what techniques? Could someone use to shift it shift by from the negative to the positive?

Rachel Strivelli 11:01
Yes, excellent. Okay. And so before I get too specific, let me just tell you a little bit about how our brains are. Okay. So I used to be a public school teacher. And, and one of the big jobs of teacher is motivating kids to want to do the work, right. Because if they’re not motivated to listen and learn that they’re not going to be engaged. And so I learned a lot about how brains work and, and, and all of that. So one of the things that we want to do is, in addition to like, we were saying, Before, surround yourself, listening to a podcast or something like that, or reading books, or following people who have self talk like you want to have, that’s one super easy thing that you can start doing immediately. And the other thing that you want to start doing is just being aware of what is like this internal track that’s going through your head, that’s saying the things, and you might have no idea where it came from, you know, like we said, some of us know it came from someone, so an old English teacher, or parent or whoever, but maybe you don’t have any idea where it comes from, you want to notice that thought, and one of the most important things is to have compassion for yourself, once you notice it, and not beat yourself up, and oh, my gosh, there’s that thought, again, I’m such a loser, well, then your back negative self talk plays, right being critical, and beating yourself up about it. So you want to take this thought that you notice and move it toward come up with something that’s more neutral, or more positive than that. And the thing that your brain really loves to attach on to are open ended questions. So instead of, like, let’s say, you’re worried about starting a business and failing one of my first clients that I consulted with, she ran a little bakery cafe. And she told me every day I read about failing businesses, because I’m so afraid that I’m going to fail. And I said to her stop doing that today. As soon as she told me, I was like no more of that. You’re only going to read about successful businesses from now on. Because what you have been doing is you’re fixating and training yourself to look at the failing businesses and whether or not you realize it, your brain is copying some of that information. And unconsciously you’re absorbing it and taking it on. So instead of thinking, Oh, my business is going to fail. How do I stop it from failing? She one of the questions I believe, that I gave her was something along the lines of what would a successful business look like to me? What would I do today? That adds to my success? What would I do today that a successful businesswoman does? And so framing it in that open way, what it does is your brain starts looking for evidence to answer the question. Because if you think about like, when you hear a song that you like, but you only hear a little bit of it, and then you don’t, the song doesn’t finish, like you’re getting out of your car or walking out of a store and the song was playing, your brain will start finishing that song and playing it all day long in your head. It’s the same thing with our self talk. If you ask your brain a question, like what would a successful businesswoman do today? All day long. Your brain wants to finish the song finish the question it wants to answer it, it wants to get an answer that will make it feel good and so all day long. You’re looking for what could I do? Where’s the evidence? Oh, so and so I mentioned something about they have a need for the candles that I make or the marketing services that I offer or the whatever it is that you’re selling. And then you see opportunities that you don’t see if you’re not priming yourself for this positive way of framing it and positive self talk. So So to break it down again, just super simplify it because I know I went on a little bit, come up with a question that’s open ended, that you can ask yourself, that’s going to lead you in the direction of what your goal is.

The first question that my thought, because I’ve done that, too, is good, is what if you asked that question? And your initial thought was like, I don’t know.

Hmm. Not to know, okay. Yeah, it’s okay. Um, because I’m here, because we’re in business and listeners are, I’m going to lean in a little more to this, there’s going to be a lot that we don’t know, we’re going to constantly be at our growing edge, if we’re going to be the kind of women that we want to be, you know, these women who are building a business maybe also building a legacy being role models for children being role models for people in our community. I don’t know all the answers, I’m sure I’ll learn something this week, that expands me and makes me think, oh, my gosh, this is amazing. I’m gonna start doing this. And so it’s okay not to know. And, and this is the other funny thing when I was a teacher we didn’t school is not set up to teach this growth mindset and to new ideas, and being comfortable not knowing and comfortable failing. But we need to have some level of comfort with that to grow and experiment and do the things that we need to do the things that we want to do. And so I think I always go back to self love for a lot of like, if you don’t know what to do, Miko two answers, take a break, and practice some self love. Because when you take a break, and you drink some water, or you relax, or you text someone who you care about, then you get back in this good space. And you think, okay, it’s okay, that I don’t know.

Gianna Diggs 17:25
Yeah, that’s, that’s powerful. Because I know, even you know, I’m speaking from experience of being like, I don’t know. And, um, you know, we’ve, I don’t know how much you know, of like that I work with human design, right. And so working with human design. And working with human design, you know, you have your centers, and I have an open head and Arjuna. And in having that, I’m going to always want to be certain. So I have to tell myself, like, it’s okay to not know the answer, because my brain is going to always want to search for it. Because that energy that I take in and I amplify, right, because the open center, and I don’t have any filters either. So I don’t have any gates to find. That’s always where my mind goes, when I think about wanting to be certain. I’m like, Well, what if I don’t know the answer? And then now I’m always looking for the answer. And I love how you just stressed on like, you don’t have to know the answer because it can come right, it can be an intuitive download, you can find it just from reading something, you can find it from listening to this podcast, right? Like, there’s so many different ways that we can find ways to be certain, but we don’t have to be certain. I think that’s super powerful. And I also use so

Rachel Strivelli 18:35
much and I’m glad you asked that question too, because I definitely, I think so many of us, we get there and we think oh, I don’t know, that means I should stop. Yeah, but you know, look at any small child, they don’t stop when they don’t know anything. They just either ask why or run into? throw something at the wall or?

Gianna Diggs 18:55
You Yeah, yeah. My kid, definitely your x 10,000 questions and you’re just like, I don’t know. And she’s just, like, you know, she’s four. So she’s like, God, like Mommy will why this and why that. And I think also having a curiosity of a child, right? Yeah, getting getting back to that, and especially when we do feel like we don’t know, just having that curiosity make it a game. You know, like, I’m just gonna go on. I’m gonna say Instagram or social media, but sometimes that can be distracting just like going yes, for a podcast that may answer your question that’s about the topic that you’re questioning and see if you can find the episode that actually may give you some certainty. Maybe not all, but a little bit. So, I have a question, because, you know, I like to always insert a little bit of the woowoo energy and everything that I do. And something that I’ve noticed, especially with more people getting into, you know, the woowoo right, getting into manifestation getting into it. You know, all the different modalities, astrology human designed to a certain aspect is woowoo. But not really. But, um, and something that I noticed is especially like, I’m gonna use affirmations for an example, right, because you use affirmations to help you with to get a negative self talk. So positive self talk. Mm hmm. But sometimes we try to say things that like we don’t believe, right? Yeah. So how do you? I don’t know if you have any techniques for this, but I’m just gonna accent anyway. Yeah, when you’re trying to to increase to change that self talk and change from the negative to the positive? And just say you use affirmations? Like, do you have a specific technique of like, when you say I am abundant, but you look around and your account is like, we have $10? In your account? Right? Like, how do you how do you? How do you use that, that technique? Without a What’s the what? How do I want to? I’m trying to figure out I want instant access question. How do you how do you use affirmations but still allow train your brain in the process? Right? How do you without it being like, Oh, this, you know, I’m, I’m abundant. But you don’t feel abundant?

Rachel Strivelli 21:13
Yes, yes. And I think that is so such a great question. And it’s funny, because so I’ve been into woowoo stuff since I was a kid literally, because my parents were into it. So I grew up with it. And, and in my younger days, I was the kind of person that I I still have journals where I wrote pages of affirmation, and I almost pushed through in like this ridiculous like bullheaded way of like, these are the things and kind of happen because I’m breaking it down 10 times every day. And some of those things did happen, and some of them didn’t. And what, what I think, is that you’re so right, and saying, when, when we have something that we want, like, let’s say we want to be abundant, but we’re looking around, and we’re like, this is not an abundant apartment that I live in, my friends are and all of that, if we start looking around, and we see all the things that are saying no to that, it’s really easy to turn off, and pretty much talk ourselves out of it. And so, it, you could write 10 affirmations a day. But if in the back of your mind, a little voice is saying yeah, right. Yeah, right. Every time you write this down, it’s not working, and you’re not actually making any progress or shifting the energy. Mm hmm. So what I think is really important, and I’ll try and see if I can put it into words is even though self talk is, is like this mental thing that’s happening, I find bringing the characteristic or the quality that you want, let’s just use abundance, into a feeling is a much better way to work with it. So that you’re not going to have the affirmations, negating it. And so, for example, maybe I don’t feel abundant in every area of my life, but let’s say I have an abundance of love and people who care about me. So then I find that one area of my life where I can say I have this thing, and I really lean into it and feel into it and and think of how it feels when people hug me and people call me and people text me and whatever. And then and I feel that feeling. And then I think about the area that I want it, let’s say in finances and and what I consider is your kind of bridging from one area of your life to the other. So then I think about my finances. Now I’m I’m not gonna think I’ve got a million in the bank. I’m so abundant because my brain is just gonna say that $10 Yeah, that’s a lie. But if I think I feel good about my bank account, I’m so happy that I have a bank account to hold my money. And start with something really basic because if it’s if you try and leap too far from where you are to what you want, with affirmations, they just fall flat. And it doesn’t mean that you can’t have big dreams because I have big dreams I feel like you do and so many people listening I’m sure. But if you lean into the really work on the feeling of what the big dream is, but then stair step your way. In terms of the logistics of whatever phrase you’re telling yourself. I haven’t been abundance of friends, I have an abundance of ways of making money, I have an abundance of ideas for making money, I have an abundance of bills coming in, you can say. So I see in the future, there will be an abundance of money to pay those bills, try and start shifting your attitude in small ways that that you can believe. And then you can build to the next area. Because like I said, dreaming big is amazing. But if you talk these affirmations that feel so big, that they’re unbelievable, I find that it’s very hard to keep your momentum moving in that direction.

Gianna Diggs 25:44
Yeah, and that’s so powerful. And I love the way you explained it. Because just speaking from personal experience, you know, I have my affirmation and my manifestation book and all these other things. And sometimes I feel as I’m writing it, like, you know, you start to question in your mind, like, I’m writing something like, is this thing really gonna happen? Right? And so changing this, you know, just from one thing of like, I want abundance of finances to, like, I have abundance of love, like, that’s super powerful. Because your brain is able to see it better. And I think that’s, that’s always, you know, nowadays, you know, everyone’s into the woowoo. So everyone’s into manifestation. And I love how you explained it, because I don’t I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it explained that way. Hmm. You know,

Rachel Strivelli 26:32
yeah, I feel like I do have my own spin on it, if you will, about manifesting, because I bet like I said, I got into, it’s so young. And it’s, it’s, like evolved and changed over time to my own way of seeing it. And you know, the other thing I think, which is really super helpful, is, even though I’m so much about community and connecting with people, and having people who know what your dreams are, sometimes it’s important to notice, are you around people who either they don’t really make you feel good about the things you want, or they have so much that you feel really in lack, and all you do is look at them, like with desire or envy. I’m thinking of, you know, it’s super easy to go on, about any social media platform and say, Oh, well, so and so just went on a vacation in Mexico. And I wish I did that. And, you know, so and so got this brand deal. And that’s what I want. And so and so got this speaking or engagement, and, oh, their business is doing amazing, but I’m not doing when we get into comparison, it really undermines our own honoring of who we are and where we are in the journey and in the experience. And so, you know, like I said before, it always goes back to self love for me. So I just, I take it back, and I practice self love. And I think, okay, I need to love myself, I’m going to love myself, I’m going to love where I am. And I’m going to think is are those things that I see and desire and that maybe I’m jealous of do I truly want those? Or am I just thinking? That’s what it means if I’m abundant and successful. And that’s why I’m fixated on it. And so I’ve spent a lot of time and I think it’s really helpful to spend the time to see is this just what society tells me I want? Or do I truly want that? And therefore like, yes, I want to look at those role models and learn from them and lean towards it. Because I think that can be another thing too, with manifesting that. There are things that I thought I wanted at the time. And then when they didn’t happen, and I sat with it more and more I thought I came to the realization some of those things I didn’t really want but I was just going along with an idea of what I thought would make me happy. And the things that it seemed like I should want but that I don’t actually want.

Gianna Diggs 29:10
Right? Oh my gosh, that is so powerful. Oh my god, she just dropping gems on me right now? Oh, no, because we we do like for me personally. And you know, any listener can tell me if they identify with this. For me my manifestations, or the things I want to manifest usually aren’t these outlandish things. They’re the things that I desire, like in the now or like, what what is affecting me right now that needs to change. Like, that’s personally how I try to use manifestation or how I how my brain works. Like I can’t think about five years from now I’m thinking about next month. You know, I’m thinking about next year. I’m not thinking about five to 10 years from now. And I just think that, you know, when we write these things down, sometimes it’s like we think that we want it so bad and then we’re trying to figure out why it’s not happening. And then we look to say like, is that really what I want? Or is that a catalyst of something else? Right? Is that something else that is, is pulling at me that I’m not fully kind of grasping or acknowledging?

Rachel Strivelli 30:14
Yes. Oh my gosh, I love that you said that. And I just want to interject one little thing. Because as much as I love manifesting, I also think like you said, there are things in life that can catalyze new changes, new growth, that we have no control over, that we wouldn’t wake up one day and be like, I manifested this pandemic, and that’s not so great. It’s like, No, it really is it. There’s so many things that can happen that are struggles and trials and tribulations. But if you can continuously, keep on loving yourself, keep on trying to grow on the ways that you can and striving for what you want. And being good to people around you, you know, having good, whatever you want to call it, karma, good relations, being respectful. And, and those qualities, you move towards the things that you desire, because I think the universe always has our back, it always wants the best for us. But we as individuals have our own ideas of what we want, right? But when I’m in a tough time, and let’s say what I want to manifest isn’t manifesting, and I’m having negative self talk, if I can get myself to say, okay, one day, this will be in the past. And I might even be thankful for this experience. What can I find about what’s happening right now, that’s is exactly as life should be, as life was designed for me for my best soul’s growth. And when I can get to that place and get a little bit objective, and just not be in the thick of it mad because things aren’t going how I want that I have just found it just transforms everything. And the ripples just go out have positive experiences and new abundance and all of the good things that you want come in.

Gianna Diggs 32:17
Yeah, yeah. Oh, gosh, you like I said, if you I hope whoever’s listening to this is taking notes, because I know. Um, so my last question for you is, um, what advice would you have I know, we gave a lot of advice, but I know that someone might be listening to this and like, is really, really, really struggling. And that person that might be on the verge of giving up on their business might be on the verge of just, you know, saying like, this is not worth it. I’m gonna just go back to, you know, working for someone else. What, what piece of advice, what words of wisdom? Could you give that Mom, that’s just like, do you know if I don’t get it together? In the next 30 days? This? Is it?

Rachel Strivelli 33:09
Mm hmm. Yeah. Oh, well, and first, I want to say for anybody who’s going through that, that is, that’s a pretty tough place to be. And I have compassion for that, because it’s not. It’s easy. Whatever, I’m going to say it’s easier for me to say it than to be the one having to make the decision for where happening, right. And so I acknowledge that. And the other thing I want to say is there, you might want to, when I have big decisions to make, I always like to get out pen and paper. For me, it’s actually markers and paper, and do some journaling and do some deep soul searching. So you may feel that this business is your destiny, you have to do it, you want to do it, all of that stuff. If you spend some time doing soul searching, and that’s what you find. But for whatever reason, all the logistics aren’t working out right now. Maybe you could tell yourself, I’m going to step back to some degree for a period of time I’m going to get a part time job or take out a loan or do whatever I need to to cover my bills, make sure that I can live and get by and and take a break and then come back to it because it doesn’t always make sense to push through last year, I took almost six months off of business because my son had insomnia. And he was up all night, almost every night and I was too and I just couldn’t function. And so I emailed my list and I told my clients and and everybody else was I said I’m taking off for six months and we When I did that, there was a part of me that felt that I was failing. And, but But I sat with it for a few days, and I thought, my kids not always gonna have this thing that he’s going through. We’re not always going to be in a pandemic, like all of these external circumstances are not always going to be the way. So how can I step back, do the bare minimum to feel like I’m still engaged in some way, and shift and tell myself, I will come back to it at some point. And, and then in January, I came back to it, my son still wasn’t sleeping great. But by that point, I said, I don’t care, I just have to do this. And and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pivoting with taking a break with stepping back to clear your head and did some new perspectives. Because you never know, maybe you get a part time job, and you meet someone there or a full time job. And that person inspires you. And you leave that business and start another one. Or maybe they become your next greatest person in your business, who totally transforms the way you do things. And so I think that being open to knowing that

things are not working out, doesn’t mean they’re not working out forever. I have this one, it’s in one of my YouTube videos, but I think it’s on one of my blog posts to a bad day doesn’t mean you have a bad life, like remember that. So like a business that’s not working right now doesn’t mean that you will never do well in business, or doesn’t even mean that you won’t do well at this business. But there may be something that needs to change. And who knows what that is, I don’t know all the ins and outs. But I, I know some people would maybe say just work harder or just believe in yourself more. But unless those people are paying your bills, I don’t know if that’s always a really responsible point of view to have. Because there are real realities that can impact your ability to do something and not, not every business will succeed. But every thing that you’ve learned from this, you can apply to the next thing, and you won’t be starting from square one, even if it’s totally different business, you’ll be starting as a person with experience. And so like right now, I’m an intuitive life coach, and manifesting teacher, several years ago, seven or eight years ago, I was teaching organic gardening, and I loved it, but it reached its point for me where I didn’t want to do it anymore. And I have started over many times in my career, and I used to have a little bit of funny feelings about that. People are gonna think I just changed things a lot, or I’m always starting at ground zero when I started new field. But now I just feel like it’s more of every place that I have been has given me something that is part of this picture of my life part of this thing that I’m building, and I don’t know, you know, we won’t know till the ends of our life, like what are all the parts and pieces going to fit together. But if you can give yourself the respect and the attention to just really honor who you are and honor where you are in life and be kind and loving to yourself. And if if it’s a learning experience, well, then it was a learning experience. And then and then you move on and start something new.

Yes, yes. So my website is soul pioneer. That’s soulpioneer.com. And I have some freebies there that you may want to check out. There are some handouts about manifesting that you can download and working with yourself talk and nurturing your intuition, because I’m really big into intuition, as well. And I also have a YouTube channel and I’m on Instagram, that’s probably the platform I’m on the most these days Instagram and YouTube. And I would love to stay connected. I work with people one on one, coaching. And also I have some small groups that run so if you want to have a supportive, intuitive person cheering you on helping you to grow and expand to this version of your next level and you want to increase your manifesting ability and success. I would love if you would reach out to me.
