How to Discover Your Passions with Your Secret Talents

Ever learn that a celebrity has a talent that you weren’t aware of? 

I recently discovered that Erykah Badu not only is an age-defying Grammy Award-winning neo-soul singer, but also a certified doula! She made the discovery when she helped her best friend deliver her baby in 2001.

 Erykah, as of 2019, has delivered over 40 babies and plans to open her own practice. She now has developed a talent that has turned into something that she is passionate about. 

Many celebrities have multiple talents, but you don’t have to be famous to have talent.

So let me ask you, what talents are hiding within you? 

Please do not answer the question with “Nothing.”

Everyone Has Talent

But if that’s your answer, I understand.

Maybe you came from an environment that didn’t foster your talents or had no encouragement for your gifts so they went unrecognized. Or maybe you repressed their talents because you felt ashamed.

Despite your upbringing, Do not believe that you have nothing special or unique to add to the world. This is a limiting belief. 

We all have more talent than we think we do.

So I’ll ask again 

What talents are hiding within you? 

If you are still unsure of your secret talents, here are some simple tips to help you through your discovery: 

1. What Do You Love To Do? What Are You Interested In? 

If you still think you don’t have much talent, start looking at what you love to do with your time. 

The things you’re good at are often things you enjoy doing the most. Your talents could even stem into a full-blown career where you wouldn’t only be helping yourself, you’d be helping others too. 

Maybe you love to sing along to your favorite song and your family and friends constantly tell you “girl, you can sing! Or “Your voice is beautiful!” Rather than dismiss what they are saying as just a compliment, listen to what they are saying.

Now I am not saying you need to drop what you are doing and start on a journey into becoming the next Beyoncé.

But there are other ways to foster these talents. 

Look at what you love to do (let’s use singing since we’ve already used it as an example) and combine it with something you are interested in doing.

Maybe you enjoy writing and you’ve always thought about writing for a blog or getting into songwriting.

You can pursue an active role in the creation of music by writing songs for other artists

Or you can become a freelancer by submitting your singing voice on a site like Fiverr and get hired to sing on someone’s project.

If songwriting isn’t your forte, you can create videos and post it online to Tick-Tock or IG TV. 

Or you can find open mics around your city and just sing for fun.

The possibilities are endless!

2. Step Outside of the Comfort Zone. 

Of course, stepping outside of your comfort zone won’t be easy. No one likes to feel vulnerable. 

Personally, 2020 is a year of stepping out of my comfort zone. Starting this blog, my podcast Got the Message with my 2 cousins, and eventually my YouTube page….. All beyond my comfort zone. 

And honestly, it’s frightening. 

BUT, I am glad I am fighting against all the limiting beliefs that I have that is telling me that I shouldn’t be pursuing my dreams. 

The thing is, you miss out when you stay in your comfort zone. 

You don’t get to experience what life would be like if you did leave your comfort zone. 

And you won’t be able to discover new talents if you’re not open to new things and experiences.

 3. Travel. 

Disclaimer: I know, it’s a pandemic and we are all stuck in the house not able to travel, so utilize this once we can travel again…

Traveling is my personal favorite.

And it’s a great way to step outside of your comfort zone and take in other cultures. 

The new foods you might be apprehensive to taste but try anyway, a snippet of a conversation in a different language that you catch while having coffee outside of a coffee shop in France, the adrenaline that you experience when you try something new (like hang gliding in Brazil).

All of these experiences can inspire you to discover your hidden talents and find new ideas on how to pursue these talents. 

4. Reading. 

Since traveling is not an option right now…

reading is a great way to open up the creative juices while staying home. 

You can read books on any subject that piques your interest. 

One book I recently read is Don’t Keep Your Day Job by Cathy Heller. In this book, she gives you steps on how to turn your passion into a career and live a passionate and fulfilled life. She uses the expertise of the creative entrepreneurs she interviewed on her podcast of the same name to not only motivate you to follow your dreams but also gives you action steps on how to do it. This book was very informative and helped me to think through my game plan to pursue my passion and purpose. 

Also, don’t forget about the power of the internet and all of the reading materials that are available only a search away. Most of the resources that I’ve found have come from a Google search. 

5.  Advanced Learning Through E-Courses or Community Classes. 

 Advanced learning through e-courses or community classes (online for now) is an excellent way to discover talents for quite a few reasons. Personally, I am the biggest advocate of e-courses. You can find an e-course on pretty much anything. All you have to do is Google search the type of class you are looking to take and find the best class for you that matches your budget. 

Why I love e-courses so much is that for the most part, you can take them at your own pace. So you can take the courses around your schedule.

For after social-distancing:

If: you prefer to take classes in person, you can find a class at a local community center or even your local community college (non-credit classes). It’s accessible and usually offered at affordable prices. 

Whether you decide to take an e-course or take a class in person, once you’ve chosen said class, you’ll get a good idea about the subject over the span of the course. In the end, you can decide whether or not it’s right for you. If not, you can move on and try a different course until you find one that meshes well with your needs and desires.

Pro Tip: Be Realistic

While you take classes to learn something new, remember to be realistic about what you can accomplish. We all have dreams and my motto is to dream big. I believe in the power of words and believe that you can manifest anything, but with limits. You might have always wanted to be a Broadway actor. Audition for a local community theater group first and work your way up from there. Starting from a community theater doesn’t throw your Broadway dreams out the window, it just sets up a realistic plan for you. You can always fulfill your passion on a smaller scale. 

6. Talk With Friends. 

A simple conversation with a friend can do wonders in your discovery to find your passion. Find out what your friends feel you are good at. Talk about how they discovered their passion and what they did to sharpen their skills. You might find that you have similar interests (I mean birds of a feather flock together right?). You guys can pursue these interests together, which makes for a great bonding experience.

I hope these 6 tips help you with your discovery of finding your secret talents. Here is some additional advice to help you on your journey:

Everyone’s Talents Are Worth Developing

I’ve already said this, but understand that everyone has a talent. This is especially important as a mother. Often when we hear about children with incredible talents they are entertainers or child prodigies featured on daytime talk shows like Ellen. 

While I love watching these talented children on television and even know a few people that have had their children’s talents go viral, don’t forget about your own children’s talents, which might not be so obvious. Understand that everyone’s talents are worth developing.

Children find inspiration in what they see and hear around them. For example, your child might watch Simone Manuel swim on the world stage at the Olympics. Rather than ignore your daughter’s desire to participate in a swimming program, try it out. 

Or your son admires LeBron James and wants to be the next basketball sensation. They might possibly be the next Simone Manuel or LeBron James or they may never make it to the Olympics or the NBA finals, but they will learn discipline, hard work, perseverance, and teamwork while getting exercise and making new friends.

In the process of pursuing your kid’s talents, don’t forget about your own. You are never too old to foster the talents you had as a kid.

Discovering your hidden talents is a wonderful way to find what brings you joy and allows you to live a passionate life. 

We tend to love the things we’re good at, so go out there and uncover your undiscovered talents. It could lead you to a life of wealth and fulfillment.
